Brisbane's City Cycle
Like many great world cities (Paris, Melbourne, Mexico City, Lyon) Brisbane has introduced a bicycle hire scheme.
Here's the Pros and Cons
Cons
- The bikes are heavy (to minimise vandalism and theft) so uphill trips are hard work. Some Brisbane precinkts feature hilly landscapes like Paddington, West End, Highgate Hill
- You must "dock" your bike at a city cycle station every 30 minutes or pay for the time after that on top of your daily/monthly/fee
- There's a subscription fee
- You must carry your helmet with you (it's law in Qld to wear a helmet when cycling) There are new initiatives in place so that you can purchase affordable helmets at outlets AND I've seen plenty of "courtesy" helmets hanging on the cylces which I now eagerly use.
- Brisbane summers (November - April) are hot and not conducive to excessive exercise
- City Cycle access hours are limited 5am - 10pm
Pros
- The bikes are solid, of great quality and run well with 3 gears and a carry basket
- City Cycle stations are positioned regularly around the city and inner city (perfect for exploring Precinkts)
- Visitors to Brisbane can hire the bikes in a one-off manner
- There's a phone app which makes it easy to track where all the cycle stations are positioned
- It's the perfect way to explore West End, South Brisbane, CBD, Fortitude Valley, New Farm and Tenerife precinkts
- City Cycle is an environmentally conscious way to see a city. And it's healthy!
- Cycling in Brisbane's cooler months is a dream with average maximum temperatures being around 22deg Celcius
- It's great to support new initiatives
- No problems with parking or traffic congestion
