Sweet Fads

It's intriguing to follow food fads as they develop, refine and diversify across the globe.  And for those of you with a sweet-tooth this fad fascination is even more compelling when it involves sugar!

A decade ago donuts ruled the roost with every conceivable topping and filling.  They were enough to make you sick, and they did. Big franchise concept stores developed around the love of Donuts.  They were no longer the domain of the cop on watch or loveable Homer.

The donut frenzy has passed now with only the big players remaining. Precinkt is a little short on decent donut places - have you got any good suggestions?  We'd love to be pleasantly surprised. Please comment below.

Gelato has been around since ancient Rome when ice and snow was brought back from mountaintops and preserved underground.  So as fads go, we could say that Gelato is a stayer.  Perhaps it is more correct to say that Gelato is a seasonal fad - and with every summer comes new flavours and icy cold experiences.  Precinkt's favourite in Australia is Messina Gelato in the Victoria St Darlinghurst Precinkt of Sydney.

In Brisbane Qld try Shlix in the Brunswick St Fortitude Valley precinkt

In the Beachside precinkt of Newcastle try Estabar Gelati and Espresso

Try Sweet Envy's beautifully gourmet gelato when in Hobart Tasmania

Where do you find your best Gelato?  We need some suggestions for Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and of course New York!

Next came cup cakes thanks to Carrie and Magnolia Bakery NYC (Sex in the City for those uninitiated). You could get them tiny, you could get them oversized, you could get them glitzy you could get them home-style.  Besides purchasing, people started to bake them at home from glossy cup cake cookbooks.  Cup Cake makers arrived at picnics, wowing friends with tiered cup cake holders adorned with their masterpieces.

The craze is still continuing and you can find plenty of Precinkts awash with pretty cupcakes.

We LOVE these butch cupcakes from Butch Bakery in New York.  See, Carrie! You can't have it all!

Can you tell us where your favourite cup cake store is?

Lately, there's a Macaron fad.  If you're in Australia, Adrian Zumbo (Masterchef) had a little something to do with this craze.  All of a sudden your favourite cafe had a gobsmacking array of macarons all stacked neatly under the obligatory glass cloche.

You'll find great macarons here -

Where have you had a grrrrreat Macaron?

What's the next sweet trend?  Comment below and let us know your predictions.
